The Seychelles has developed a reputation as one of the most exclusive archipelagoes in the Indian Ocean. The picture postcard sun-kissed sands bordered by tropical palms are particularly popular with honeymooners and holidaymakers - so much so the islands have put strict limits on tourist arrivals in order to maintain its natural beauty. As a result, the growth of Air Seychelles, which celebrated its 30th anniversary just recently, has been much slower than many of the world&#39;s flag carriers. But working with the government towards a sustainable tourism policy is one way the airline and the destination can ensure their future success.<br />

The carrier was formed in September 1977 as Seychelles Airlines following the amalgamation of local operators Air Mahe and Inter-Island Airways. These had provided air links around the islands since 1972 when the country&#39;s new gateway, Seychelles International Airport, opened. The following year the company was rebranded as Air Seychelles, launching services on October 26, 1978 using three Britten-Norman Trislanders and two Islanders.<br />

The company was solely domestic concern, moving passengers around the islands and providing onward feeder flights for foreign carriers flying into the Seychelles. This worked successfully for several years. However, the global economic recession of the early 1980s significantly affected the islands&#39; tourist indutry. Visitor numbers dropped by almost a half, and Lufthansa and British Airways abandoned their services to the Seychelles, leaving Air France as the only international carrier serving the islands.<br />

In a bid to rescue its ailing tourist industry, the islands&#39; government made funding available for Air Seychelles to develop its own international routes. The carrier signed a year-long charter agreement with UK carrier British Caledonian Airways for one of its Douglas DC-10-30s and launched its inaugural international service on NOvember 1, 1983, to London/Gatwick via Frankfurt. At the end of the year&#39;s lease, the DC-10 was returned and a replacement sourced from the Dutch operator Martinair. As demand for seats continued to rise, a second DC-10 was leased from the same carrier and weekly services to London via Jeddah began, as did direct flights to Frankfurt and Amsterdam.<br />

The Seychelles form an archipelago of 115 islands scattered across an area of 154,441 square miles (400,000 km2) in the Indian Oean, some 480 miles (1,600 km) off the east coast of Africa. They spent 160 years under British rule before gaining independence on june 29, 1976. During the early years of self-governance, the people of the Republic of Seychelles endured a period of instability, a bloodless coup in 1977, an army mutiny in 1982 and several more failed coup attempts before multi-party politics returned in the early 1990s. Since then, the islands have become one of the world&#39;s top holiday destinations.
