Today the city has seen an amazing amount of growth with its population tripling in 25 years to 12 million. A commercial and cosmopolitan center it has become a popular destination for tourist. Turkey is mostly a Muslim country but a with a secular government. I felt very comfortable in Istanbul and would have enjoyed spending more time there.
